Haiku, Maui Cottage Rental: The Hidden Gem of the North Shore

Nestled in the lush, rain-kissed hills of Maui’s North Shore, Haiku is one of the island’s best-kept secrets — a serene countryside village where nature, culture, and community blend into something truly special. Far from the bustle of resort areas like Wailea or Ka‘anapali, Haiku offers travelers an authentic taste of rural Maui life: green pastures, misty mornings, tropical fruit trees, and a deep sense of calm that invites you to slow down and breathe in the aloha spirit.

A Landscape Painted in Green

Haiku’s beauty begins with its landscape. Located just a few miles inland from Paia, the area sits on the northeast slope of Haleakalā, Maui’s dormant volcano. The climate here is lush and subtropical — often cooler and rainier than the drier leeward sides of the island. Those frequent showers give Haiku its vibrant greenery, bamboo forests, and waterfalls that seem to appear out of nowhere after a morning rain.

The gentle mist and fertile volcanic soil make it ideal for organic farms, flower nurseries, and fruit orchards, and it’s not uncommon to see roadside stands selling fresh bananas, coconuts, or papayas grown just a few feet away.

A Peaceful Retreat from the Tourist Crowds

What sets Haiku apart is its tranquility. It’s not a place of large resorts or packed beaches, but rather a haven for travelers seeking peace, privacy, and authentic local charm. The small-town feel runs deep — from the friendly shopkeepers at the Haiku Marketplace to the local families gathering for shave ice at the nearby snack shops.

The Haiku Marketplace itself is a community hub where visitors can grab a smoothie at Colleen’s at the Cannery, browse handmade crafts, or pick up fresh produce from the local market. It’s the perfect stop before exploring the nearby waterfalls or heading toward Hana.

Places of Interest and Attractions

While Haiku is small, it’s surrounded by an abundance of natural and cultural attractions:

Twin Falls – Just a short drive along the famous Road to Hana, Twin Falls is one of Maui’s most accessible waterfall hikes. Visitors can swim in freshwater pools, wander through lush jungle, and enjoy fresh coconut water from local farm stands.

Ho‘okipa Beach Park – About ten minutes away, this world-renowned surf and windsurfing spot offers breathtaking ocean views and frequent sightings of Hawaiian green sea turtles basking on the sand.

Pe‘ahi (Jaws) – For thrill-seekers and surf enthusiasts, Pe‘ahi is one of the world’s most legendary big-wave surf breaks. During winter swells, waves can reach up to 60 feet — a spectacle best viewed from the bluffs above.

Maui’s Upcountry – From Haiku, it’s easy to venture uphill to Makawao and Kula, where you can explore ranches, lavender farms, and panoramic views stretching across the island.

Local Stores and Hidden Finds

Haiku’s charm lies in its eclectic mix of local businesses and artistic flair. Don’t miss:

Colleen’s at the Cannery – A local favorite known for hearty breakfasts, fresh fish, and an inviting, relaxed vibe.

Nuka – An acclaimed Japanese restaurant serving island-fresh sushi and creative small plates, tucked quietly along Haiku Road.

Haiku Market – Your one-stop spot for groceries, fresh produce, and island snacks.

Baked on Maui – A cozy bakery and café offering pastries, sandwiches, and locally roasted coffee — perfect for starting your day.

Maui Kombucha Bar – A funky local hangout offering kombucha on tap, vegan meals, and a glimpse into Haiku’s bohemian heart.

The Spirit of Haiku

More than its attractions or restaurants, what makes Haiku so special is its energy. The town draws a mix of artists, farmers, surfers, and free spirits — people who have chosen to live close to nature and far from the stress of modern life. For visitors, that means an experience that feels authentic and deeply connected to the land.

Whether you’re sipping coffee under a banyan tree, exploring a hidden waterfall, or chatting with locals at the farmers’ market, Haiku reminds you that the true luxury of Maui isn’t found in its resorts — it’s found in its rhythm.

The Soul of Maui: Exploring the North Shore’s Laid-Back Magic while Vacationing

There’s a rhythm to the North Shore of Maui — one that moves with the wind through the ironwood trees, the crash of surf at Ho‘okipa Beach, and the scent of guava carried on a soft mist from the slopes of Haleakalā. It’s a place that feels less like a destination and more like a state of being — slower, greener, and effortlessly wild. Here, tucked between sugarcane fields and ocean spray, the towns of Haiku, Paia, Makawao, and Kula form a tapestry of authentic island life where artistry, agriculture, and aloha meet.

Paia: The Surf Town with Soul

Once a plantation village, Paia now beats with bohemian charm. Its narrow streets are lined with surf shops, vegan cafés, and local boutiques selling everything from handmade jewelry to vintage aloha shirts. At dawn, the surfers gather at Ho‘okipa Beach Park, one of the world’s premier windsurfing and kiteboarding spots, where turquoise waves roll toward cliffs dotted with sunbathing turtles.

Grab breakfast at Paia Bay Coffee Bar, where live music drifts through a tropical garden, or enjoy fresh fish tacos at Mama’s Fish House, the legendary beachfront restaurant known for its Polynesian-inspired dishes and unforgettable views. As evening falls, Paia hums with mellow energy — a mix of locals, travelers, and artists who come together in this free-spirited enclave.

Haiku: The Hidden Jungle Retreat

Just up the road from Paia, the landscape thickens with banana trees and bamboo. Haiku is a lush, misty paradise where rainbows appear as often as the trade winds blow. This quiet countryside community once hosted pineapple plantations; today, it’s home to yoga studios, farmers’ markets, and off-the-grid hideaways perfect for reconnecting with nature.

Visit Twin Falls, the first accessible waterfall stop along the Road to Hana, where you can swim in cool pools surrounded by tropical flora. For a taste of local life, stop at the Haiku Marketplace — you’ll find everything from acai bowls and smoothies to farm-fresh produce and locally made crafts.

Makawao: The Paniolo Town with an Artistic Heart

Climb higher toward the slopes of Haleakalā, and the jungle gives way to rolling pastures. Welcome to Makawao, a charming paniolo (Hawaiian cowboy) town where ranchers and artists share the same dusty streets. Wooden storefronts house art galleries, glassblowing studios, and boutique shops, while local favorites like Komoda Store & Bakery serve up cream puffs and malasadas that are worth the detour.

Every July, the town hosts the Makawao Rodeo, celebrating its cowboy heritage with parades, roping competitions, and lively street festivities. But year-round, there’s an unmistakable creative pulse — painters, sculptors, and woodworkers draw inspiration from the mountain light and pastoral calm.

Kula: The Upcountry Jewel

Continue your ascent, and you’ll reach Kula, where crisp mountain air and sweeping views of the island greet you at every turn. Known as “Upcountry Maui,” Kula is a land of flower farms, lavender fields, and organic produce.

Visit the Ali‘i Kula Lavender Farm, where rows of purple bloom beneath Haleakalā’s watchful gaze, or the Surfing Goat Dairy, where playful goats and award-winning cheeses make for a fun family stop. For a taste of true island bounty, explore the Kula Country Farms, famous for strawberries, pumpkins, and farm-fresh delights.

Evenings in Kula are made for sunsets — golden light spilling across the clouds, the ocean shimmering far below, and the gentle scent of eucalyptus in the air.

A North Shore State of Mind

Vacationing on Maui’s North Shore isn’t about luxury resorts or itineraries packed with excursions. It’s about slowing down — waking to birdsong, chasing waterfalls, and discovering that aloha isn’t something you buy, but something you feel. Whether you’re sipping locally roasted coffee in Haiku, watching the waves at Ho‘okipa, or breathing in lavender high above Kula, one truth remains: the North Shore doesn’t just show you Maui — it shows you a gentler way to live.

MAUI, HAWAII COVID-19 INFORMATION FOR YOUR SAFETY AND PROTECTION

The cleaning of our cottage has always been a top priority. Now, more than ever, it is more important.

Our cleaning team starts out by disinfecting all surfaces in the cottage and including all handles, switches, phones, remote, and anything that can be touched. Our cottage cleaners are thoroughly trained in the latest Covid-19 disinfecting protocol.

We are rotating all linens between guests. Multiple sets including pillows, sheets, blankets, mattress pads, bedspreads are rotated and disinfected between guests.

For your protection and peace of mind, we have added Ozone Disinfection to our cleaning regimen.

Bed pillows are isolated in an ozone chamber between guests. Throw pillows are also ozonated separately.

Ozone is a very strong viruscide (50 times stronger than chlorine), which decomposes quickly into elemental oxygen. It kills bacteria, pathogens, and viruses including Covid-19.

US/CDC lists it as a safe, proven, powerful disinfectant. It explains that it simply adds a third oxygen atom to oxygen(O2) that produces ozone(O3). The added oxygen atom provides a powerful antioxidant that destroys microorganisms, pathogens, and viruses, including Covid-19. It dissipates quickly leaving only oxygen with no toxic emissions or residue.

We provide our guests with disposable masks, which are currently required in all of Maui’s businesses. Also provided will be disinfection wipes & hand sanitizer.

HAWAII THE SAFEST VACATION

Hawaii has a lower number of Covid-19 cases per capita compared to other mainland states. Our government is very serious about protecting its citizens and visitors.

Here’s what you must do to arrive on Maui…

* As of now, travelers to Hawaii 5 and older are required to take a nucleic acid amplification test from a Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments-certified laboratory within 72 hours from the final leg of departure. A trained professional must observe all tests.

ONLY TEST RESULTS FROM “TRUSTED TESTING PARNERS” APPROVED BY THE STATE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH WILL BE ACCEPTED.

* Trusted testing partners are: AFC Urgent Care, Carbon Health, City Health Urgent Care, Color, CVS Health, Kaiser Permanente (members only), Quest Diagnostics, Vault Health, Walgreens. Registration, instructions, and costs can be found on the partners websites.

* The pre-travel testing program adds another layer of protection to the SAFE TRAVELS MANDATORY ONLINE HEALTH QUESTIONNAIRE, airport temperature screening and improved contact tracing efforts. There are links and more up-to-date information for travelers seeking a pre-travel test and a list of all approved trusted testing partners at HawaiiCovid19.com.

* Free, optional, Post-Travel testing is available. It’s important to check out HawaiiCovid19.com for the latest updates.

* Temperature checks will continue at airports across the state. Anyone with a temperature higher than 100.4 degrees or who is experiencing other symptoms will be required to undergo a secondary screening at the airport with trained healthcare staff.

* Everyone must wear facial masks in all Hawaii airports and when entering places of business.
